Does Myopia Run in Families?

Exploring the Hereditary Nature of Myopia

Myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness, is a visual condition that results in blurry distance vision while nearby objects remain clear. Concerns about your child's sight often lead to the question: Does myopia run in families? Understanding the genetic aspects of myopia is crucial for proactive management.

The Genetic Factor

Myopia does indeed have a genetic link. If one or both parents have myopia, the likelihood of their children developing this condition increases. When both parents have myopia, the risk is even greater. Indeed, the genetic factors contributing to myopia can pass from generation to generation.

Environmental Factors

Lifestyle choices and daily habits can significantly impact myopia development and progression. Excessive screen time, a lack of outdoor activities, and prolonged periods of near work, such as reading or studying, can increase the risk of myopia.

Children are especially susceptible to environmental factors as their visual systems are still developing. These external influences can work in tandem with genetics, shaping how myopia progresses over time.

Early Intervention is Key to Myopia Control

Knowing your family's myopia history can help you seek early intervention. Effective strategies can manage and control its progression, even with a genetic predisposition.

  • Lifestyle Adjustments

Simple lifestyle changes, like reducing screen time and increasing outdoor activities, can reduce myopia progression and protect your child's visual health.

  • Dietary Choices

Nutritional adjustments, such as a diet rich in eye-healthy nutrients, can support your child's vision and contribute to myopia management.

  • Regular Eye Exams

Scheduling routine eye exams allows for early detection and timely intervention, which is crucial in managing myopia.

  • Educational Support

Providing information and support about myopia to family and friends can raise awareness, foster understanding, and create a network of care.

Dr. Brooks and his staff are excellent! Professional all the way through whole process from front de... sk. MA, Doctor and check out with glasses fitting. He is well informed with broad knowledge in his field. I trust him and like his kind demeanor.

Staff was friendly, Dr. Brooks was quick and efficient. Every time I come, whether it’s an annual ... exam or have my eyes measured all the staff is extremely accommodating and kind. When I changed to progressive lenses, it was difficult for me to get used to the transitions. Everyone at Kirkwood make sure to help me understand the transition to the progressive lenses, and they were happy to continue helping me until everything was perfect.

I appreciated Dr. Brooks’ honesty. I had done initial Lasik at a different location eight years ag... o for two very bad astigmatisms and I was very nearsighted back then. I am extremely happy to hear that my vision is still doing very well and this was just a routine check up. I had a very tiny correction now, and instead of pushing glasses or contacts on me, he told me that I really did not need them unless I absolutely wanted them. He also advised me if I were to go do a Lasik touchup it would correct that tiny distance vision, but then it would cause me to need reading glasses even more. That was information I did not know, and we also went over information for a family history of macular degeneration. Thanks for all the good info and being honest!

Dr. Brooks was great! He's straight to the point but in a way that you're not rushed. Answered a lot... of questions I've had looming over my head the last few years as my eyes continue to change with "age". Ladies that checked me in/out were super patient with me as well figuring out the numbers of my new insurance. Happy to have found a great place!

Friendly & competent staff in a clean, bright & comfortable office. Dr Rosso and her clinical staff ... efficiently examine you, collecting all the data needed to provide various treatment options. They then answer all your questions, allowing you to partner with them in making the best decisions for your health & lifestyle. After years with one eye doctor in our previous state of residence, it’s a relief to find someone so kind, knowledgeable and trustworthy here in TX!
